Ellie, a white woman in her late 20s, smiles at the camera. Her curly ginger hair falls to just above her shoulders, and has traces of faded pink and orange in it. She has smoky eye makeup and muted pink lipstick on, and she’s wearing cat-eye shaped glasses. She’s wearing a v-neck black dress with gold polka dots on it.

🐣 Happy Easter! 🐣 🐣 Happy Easter! 🐣
This one has been attached to me since I got out o This one has been attached to me since I got out of hospital, which is the least surprising thing that’s happened this week.

We call Ferg our little empath because he’s just the sweetest little soul. If you’re sad or sick, he’ll come and curl up with you (and make biscuits on you, if you have a fleecy blanket nearby!). He’ll bonk your face with his head until you give him a kiss, and he’ll even ‘pet’ you with his soft little paws.

He may be a Standard Issue Cat, but as far as I’m concerned, he’s the best ♥️
What a start to the month. On Friday I felt like I What a start to the month. On Friday I felt like I was getting a bit of a cold. By lunchtime on Saturday, I was being taken to hospital by paramedics because I was having my first asthma attack in the better part of a decade and my blood oxygen was hovering around 85%. I then spent most of Saturday in a side room in A&E, and after multiple nebulisers, blood tests, a chest x-ray, COVID tests, and flu tests, I was diagnosed with a chest infection and admitted to AMU.

My asthma has been the least of my health worries for a long time now. Having that flare up when I’m away from home and not only away from my family, but also away from familiar medical settings and teams - my fellow chronic illness havers get what I mean by that, right? - just added to how stressful the situation was.

Overnight I was so high on salbutamol and steroids that I didn’t get a wink of sleep, and the bed set off my chronic pain no matter what position I had it in. I was the youngest person on the ward by about 50 years - apart from the girl 3 beds down from me, who spent the entire night on FaceTime with someone 🙄 - which resulted in one of my favourite experiences: elderly women acting like I can’t possibly be seriously unwell because I’m under the age of 70. That attitude is annoying enough when they’re tutting over me using the disabled seats on public transport, but it turns out it feels even worse when they’re constantly trying to get the attention of the nurses who are having to give me my sixth nebuliser of the night because I can’t breathe!

Thank god for those nurses, though, who were having none of their nonsense. Thank god for every single member of staff who looked after me this weekend, who reminded me just how lucky we are to have the NHS. The paramedics, the nurses and doctors in A&E and on AMU, the radiographers, the porters, and the nurses in the discharge lounge. I felt so cared for - not just as a patient, but as a person - and as somebody with a decent amount of medical trauma, it was incredible to have such a positive experience in a hospital.

Now, if anyone needs me, I’ll be sleeping under the watchful eyes of Dr Ness and Nurse Ferg!

Happy Mother’s Day to my wonderful Mum, who always helps me to find the fun in life - she even managed it when I was deep in my emo era!
